Understanding the Ego: What It Really Is

Our mind was created to protect us as humans in this life, and it is a blessing from God or the universe to keep us alive in this world.

Ego is a survival mode, and I like to describe it as an overthinking reaction—when the mind becomes overwhelmed, the Ego starts to form.

Let’s explore this further together.

Ego is about Anger and Fear .
when you are free from those Two ,You are
free from Ego

How We React to Stress and Threats: the 4Fs

Did you know that as humans, when we face challenging situations or stress, there are always two types of responses? The first is Reaction Responses, which include Fight or Fawn reactions.

The second is Avoidance Responses, which include Flight or Freeze reactions. These are automatic responses to stress or danger, and they are explained in the table below.

Here’s a table explaining the 4Fs of Stress Response:

ResponseTypeDefinitionExample
FightReactionFacing the threat with aggression or defensiveness.Yelling back during an argument.
FawnReaction Agreeing just to keep peace.Over-apologizing to avoid conflict.
FlightAvoidanceEscaping or avoiding the threat“Leaving a party due to anxiety
FreezeAvoidanceUnable to speak when stressed.Going blank during a speech.

This is a survival mechanism that helps both humans and animals react quickly to threats.

It is a natural response that occurs on a physical level. However, regarding the psychological body, this mechanism is what we call the Ego.

How does the Ego control us?

The Connection Between Ego and Anxiety

I will give a brief explanation of Ego and Anxiety to understand the mechanism

Through my personal healing journey, I faced many years of suffering from Anxiety disorder. It was a challenging experience, filled with a mix of reaction and avoidance responses.

Over time, I learned more and more about what the Ego is trying to do.

For me, it was Like:

  • Anger: the need to control and change my feelings by forcing myself to feel better.
  • Fear: fear of anxiety avoiding my feelings and running away from facing them.
    What Made My Anxiety Worse!!

These feelings helped me understand the cycle of life and how we often keep ourselves stuck in problems—allowing stress and fear to repeat and intensify them.

5 Signs The Ego Is Controlling You :

I will give you 5 signs and Trauma responses we face according to our Ego:

1-creating fear-based thoughts that influence our decisions, making us react out of insecurity

2-It keeps us trapped in overthinking, self-doubt, and comparison.

3-fear of judgment and seeking validation and external approval

4-criticizing and blaming when facing a problem and reflecting our own insecurities and unhealed wounds onto others

5-Attachment to past experiences and limiting beliefs prevent us from fully experiencing the present moment.

Why criticizing or blaming others means you need to heal even if you are right?

How to Overcome Ego and Find Inner Peace?

Recognizing Your Emotions:

Surrendering and letting your emotions flow. Take a deep breath, notice your feelings, and allow yourself to experience them fully.

Learn the power of no reaction

Trust the process and believe in your healing journey. Give yourself time to heal and fully experience your pain.

Find peace by facing your emotions without aggression or defensiveness.

Allow yourself to process your feelings naturally without distractions or running away from them

Accepting Mistakes and Learning from Them:

Ask yourself deep, honest questions like: Why do I feel this way? Why is this so triggering for me?

By answering these questions, you gain deeper insight into your emotions and understand your feelings on a profound level.

Accept your emotions and thoughts, even if you don’t fully agree with them—self-awareness is the first step to healing.

Choosing Love Over Fear:

Allow yourself to fully feel the pain, even when it’s difficult. Healing is painful, but knowing that transformation is happening gives it a different meaning.

Accept and embrace yourself as you are—self-acceptance is the foundation for true change.

Love yourself unconditionally, just the way you are, and watch your growth unfold.

How loving yourself help you heal?

Conclusion

Ego is a natural part of our lives, and like everything in this world, it has both benefits and drawbacks.

The key is to learn about it, so we can distinguish between what serves us positively and what holds us back.
